Advert analysis

Advert analysis

This is a poster of the band ‘ greenday’, this poster showcases the bands new album ‘ 21st century breakdown, the way in which this poster is set out is standard for its particular genre, the name of the band is the largest text on the poster, this is their brand identity, this text is used on all of their albums and posters, this makes the band seem more familiar to its fans and this allows them to sell their brand to their audience more easily, the text itself has a unique point to it, the text looks like it has been painted on which explains the slight rugged look , this also represents the rebellious nature of this band or in fact this genre. The poster also supports the theory of Andrew Goodwin, the star image theory, mainly due to the largest or the closest image to the viewer is in fact the lead singer therefore making the product sell better. The image of the band shows that the entire band is in a close distance to the viewer meaning that each member of the band is just as important as the other members of the band. Also the general color of the poster is black suggesting that because they have not went for a more colorful approach they are trying to get straight to the point, also the writing is very basic primary colors, in this case white and yellow, once again this is nothing flash and its main purpose is to grab the viewers attention, also all of the writing which includes the main and the extra details on the poster are in bold writing once again referencing to a possible rebellious feel and to get the audiences attention straightaway.

For the task of the advert analysis I had to choose an advertising poster of a band associated with my groups chosen genre, I then analyzed the features of this advert and explained how they are used to sell the product to their target audience.

Music video analysis

Music video analysis

New divide is a music video which is very convention to the genre of rock, throughout the video several aspects or characteristics of the rock genre are portrayed in different ways throughout the video, the video starts with panning shots of the holograms of the band, this represents the advancement of technology, this also is a reference to the movie in which this music video is the soundtrack for which is transformers 2, a movie which contains robots which a very high level of technology, more of the hologram shots of the band are used when they are playing their instruments , therefore referencing to Jason Mittells theory of genre characteristics being used to sell the product , once again the hologram effect is used throughout the video which links towards the movie in which this song is the soundtrack for. The main theme of the video which is just the band playing the song in a artificial hologram world which the cutaways to the film suggest that the narrative is not all that clear, this supports carol vernalillis’s theory of how the narrative of the video is fragmented or perhaps disjointed, the other aspects of this theory are also included in this video, these aspects include that there is no real resolution and that the video does not answer the question in which its asks. However around the 1:41 mark the hologram effect is removed and the camera now shows all of the band performing their song on the set of transformers 2, however around the 1:50 mark the hologram effect comes back in. Also throughout the video there are close ups of the vocalist which supports the theory of how many shots of the vocalist will sell the product. Towards the end of the song both the hologram effect and the normal band are used aswell as the movie cutaways, however at this point the band seem to have flames coming of off them , this is a very common theme with rock videos mainly because it is one of the many conventions of rock ( fire and explosions). Overall the video does not have a very stable or solid narrative , due to this video siding with carol vernalillis’s theory of the narrative being fragmented and disjointed.

For the task of the music video analysis i had to once again choose another music video which was associatd with my groups chosen genre , however in this task i focused more on the genre conventions and how they are used throughout , i also had to include many theorists in this task to show how aspects of the genre are shown , for example 'Star image'.

Shot count

Shot Count Approx. - 140

The Bon Jovi video - 'living on a prayer' is mid/fast paced, this is convention of the particular genre in which this particular song fits into (rock), also it is filmed inside a large stadium as the band is preparing to play a big show, the other conventions used in the rock genre which is visible throughout the video is the several shots that focus on the full band throughout the video.
The close up and medium shots on the lead singer are used constantly throughout the video, this supports Andrew Goodman’s theory of how the record company’s will demand a lot of close ups on the lead singer or man artist, this is also known as star image.
Several shots of the full band with their instruments are used through the video; this supports Jason Mittell’s theory that the industries use certain characteristics, which relate to the genre to sell the product, also the use of the pyrotechnics support Mittells theory of using the genre to sell as they are a conventional aspect / characteristic in the genre of rock.
Instruments such as the guitars and the drums are being shown throughout this video, this supports Barry Keith grant’s theory of the use of familiar or recognizable characteristics to gain an audience.

For the task of the shot count of a music video I once again chose a song associated with the our chosen genre , I took an approximate count of the song which came out at around 140 shots being used in the video , I  also explained why these shots may have been used and how they resemble the genre.

Skills audit.
9 screen analysis

For the task of the 9 screen analysis I had to choose a music video that was affiliated with our chosen genre, I then had to choose 9 different focus points on the video that would have been associated with the genre and explain why I chose these and how they represent particular aspects of the genre.
